Though some environmentalists want to team up with union miners to fight mountaintop removal mining, the United Mine Workers plans to watch the debate from the sidelines.

The international leadership has remained silent on the controversial mining technique.

Local mining leader Teddy Hapney said the union will continue listening to both sides.

Environmentalists fighting mountaintop removal, a strip mining technique that uses explosives and skyscraper-sized shovels to remove the rock covering coal seams, say the fight doesn't pit jobs against the environment.
