The West Virginia Black Walnut Festival has grown from a one-day event in 1954 to five days filled with attractions that draw thousands of visitors to Spencer.

John Denbigh remembers when people lined up for miles with their trucks filled with black walnuts. They were on their way to Spencer to sell them.

"Back in the day, we produced quite a local crop," he recalled. "But that hasn't happened for a while."

Denbigh is president of Casto & Harris Inc., which supplies ballots and other essentials to county governments.

Organizers say the Black Walnut Festival attracts more visitors than any similar event in the state.
