His friends called him brilliant, talented and tenacious, qualities that would have served him well as an Episcopal priest.

Yet former Kanawha County Prosecutor and Charleston Mayor James "Mike" Roark died before he could achieve the ultimate goal of his colorful, dramatic and tragic life.

"He was a unique and multifaceted fellow with limitless talent," said Charleston lawyer James McIntyre, who had both opposed and defended Roark in court. "I regarded him highly."
