WHEN I think of historic Watt Powell Park and its 50th
anniversary
this season, I remember
- My favorite press box in all the world, sitting ever so high
behind home plate. God bless the Alley Cats for moving us back
upstairs.
- The late Shorty Hardman, former Gazette sports editor, who
always slammed the door to the press box on his way to the restroom.
- The night the lights went out on John Dickensheets. It was the
worst of all minor league scenarios - 10-cent beer night and a bad
call by an umpire costing the home team a win. That combination led
to 150 or so irate fans congregating outside the umpires' dressing
room.
