Howard L. "Bee" Murphy, 90, a well-known figure in South
Charleston city government, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, in Thomas
Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Murphy served two terms on South Charleston City Council in the
1970s, had a special interest in the fire department and pushed for
more modern equipment for firefighters.
After his retirement from Trojan Steel Corp., MPC Division, St.
Albans, Murphy worked for Ace Hardware in South Charleston and along
with his wife, Sibyl Murphy, served as an usher and tour guide at
the
state Cultural Center.
In the mid-80s, Murphy began a long-running tradition of
participation in the Vandalia Gathering's Biggest Liar Contest, and
