AS a pediatrician, I have to respond daily to calls pertaining to a child whose intestinal tract suddenly starts rejecting nourishment. While talking to parents about their child's vomiting or diarrhea, I often sense heightened emotions and deep concerns. Parents often feel compelled to offer food or drink right away to comfort their child or in response to the child's demands, only to discover that this makes the symptoms worsen or reoccur.
