MARIETTA, Ohio - As mega-chains and foreign competition make mom-
and-pop businesses an endangered species, family-owned operations
like the Marietta Silver Globe Company are not only a rarity, but a
treasure. Started in 1938 by George Rigaux, a Belgian immigrant and
glass blower by trade, the Marietta-based company is now run by
Rigaux's granddaughter, Linda Flannery, and her son John.
Their product - hand-blown garden globes - remains virtually as
unique as it was 68 years ago, thanks to the family's respect for
tradition; the company is the only one in the United States that
still hand blows its glass balls.
