Area World War II veterans say it's about time Washington ended the squabbling over a memorial intended to honor Americans who fought in the most devastating war of the 20th century - a dispute that took longer than the war itself. Several veterans groups in West Virginia have also been active in raising money and support for the World War II Memorial in Washington, a project that garnered a nationwide, $172 million fund-raising effort.

"Our street signs would be in German or Japanese if it wasn't for these World War II guys," said Gale Harper, the state director for the Division of Veterans Affairs. "If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have the freedoms we have."
