Thursday, after the sun sets and the first stars appear in the
sky, Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, ends. Observant Jews
throughout the world will have spent the day in prayer,
contemplating their deeds of the past year, making resolutions for
the future, asking forgiveness for their sins.
They will be hungry. Yom Kippur is a fast day, when neither food
nor beverage is allowed for 24 hours.
Most of them will hurry home from synagogue services to break the
fast with friends and family. The first whiff of coffee coming from
the kitchen is like liberation, signaling that sustenance is nigh.
