For two dozen ambitious young lawyers, the early 1980s were an exciting time to be in the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office.

Mike Roark and his top assistants were running what those in and out of that cramped space in the old courthouse say may have been the best law firm in the state. Conviction rates were sky high. The local defense bar knew Roark and his team, made up mostly of green and underpaid lawyers, would take on any case, no matter how tough.

But just how good those days were might be best weighed by looking at the people that office produced. Judging by where the alumni ended up, Roark still casts a long shadow in courtrooms all over town.
