Susan E. Sowards, longtime obituary writer for the Charleston Daily Mail, has died after a long illness.

Sowards died Thanksgiving Day at home.

She joined Charleston Newspapers in 1968 to work in the composing department and accepted a position as the Daily Mail's obituary writer in 1983. It was a job that, because of the Daily Mail's deadlines, required her to arrive at the office as early as 4:30 a.m. and call as many as 70 funeral homes around the state.
