Kanawha County's circuit judges have named Lt. Johnny Rutherford
as the new head of courthouse security when Capt. Robert Long
retires at the end of this year.
They also ordered Sheriff Dave Tucker to provide a replacement
bailiff.
The move is the first test of the relationship between Tucker and
the judges since the state Supreme Court refused to hear a lawsuit
from Tucker on Wednesday that sought to curtail the judges' control
of courthouse security and other related issues.
Tucker's spokesman, Cpl. Jess Bailes, said that while the way the
judges informed the department was not ideal, Tucker would have no
choice but to comply with the request.
