Honest, it was an innocent remark. If I'd known it was going to
anger the fishing gods, I'd have kept my big mouth shut. I didn't,
however... Gene and I had taken advantage of last weekend's warm
spell by hauling our cabin-fevered carcasses to McDowell County's
Elkhorn Creek. We figured - correctly, as it turned out - that the
unseasonable temperatures would trigger insect hatches and send the
trout on a feeding spree.
I guessed - again, correctly - that Blue-Winged Olive mayflies
would be the most likely bugs to hatch, so I began fishing with a
No. 18 Olive Parachute dry fly.
Gene, unconvinced that trout would rise to a floating fly this
early in the season, clinch-knotted a tiny ...
