WASHINGTON - Growth in West Virginia's prisons has slowed, but the number of inmates continues to climb. West Virginia fell out of the top 10 fastest growing prison systems, a report by the U.S. Department of Justice released late Wednesday shows.

The state's prison population was the 12th-fastest growing in the country between June 1998 and June 1999, climbing by 8.9 percent. Vermont's prisons expanded at the fastest rate, 14.9 percent.

West Virginia's rate is down slightly from the previous two years, when the prison population grew by more than 12 percent each year.
