DENVER - For more than a century, The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News have fought for turf in one of the longest-running circulation wars in the country. The battle waged throughout Colorado's economic booms and busts, heating to a boiling point in the 1990s, when both newspapers offered subscriptions at ridiculously low rates, including a penny a day.

But an end to the bitter yet colorful competition became apparent Thursday when the two papers announced plans to form a joint operating company.
