N. and her husband, T., are facing tough choices for their three
young children as the holidays approach. T. recently learned he
soon will be laid off from his job. While N., 27, has her hands full
raising their children, 7, 6 and 4, she also volunteers at the
children's schools.
Their caseworker at Head Start said one of the family's greatest
needs is for a washer and dryer so that they can stop spending so
much of their scant funds and time taking clothes to the Laundromat.
Each trip costs the family about $25 and takes almost 2 hours to
complete.
Right now, the family supports itself on less than $8,000 a year
