ELKHORN - Her smooth hands flutter as her soft Southern voice
rises and falls. In a small, warm coal-camp house, Claudia Via spins
a story of old McDowell County, before integration. "When I was a
little girl, this was the black section. You know where the water
plant is?" It's only a few dozen yards away. "That's where the white
section started. ... Now, it's all mixed up."
The tiny hollow Via calls home is smack in the middle of eastern
McDowell County, which is one of West Virginia's most racially
diverse neighborhoods.
Here's the unusual thing about McDowell County: Drive 20 miles
west of Via's house and you're in West Virginia's very, very least
racially diverse ...
