SAN JOSE, Calif. - Missy walks stiffly and her face has whitened.
Yet this aging mutt from Mill Valley has emerged at the forefront of
an unusual and influential effort at pet cloning.
A small Bay Area company, Genetic Savings & Clone Inc., has
steered $9 million into an effort to build a breed of matching
Missies - and is widely considered the country's best bet to take
control of this hotly contested corner of the genetics business. But
its "Missyplicity" project is also drawing attention for its unusual
approach, which includes an insistence on cloaking details about the
company's ownership and financing.
