ST. LOUIS - Offensive coordinator Mike Martz will succeed Dick Vermeil as the next head coach of the St. Louis Rams under an agreement reached last weekend between the team and Martz's agent.

The 48-year-old Martz will become the Rams head coach whenever the 63-year-old Vermeil, who has two years left on his five-year contract with the Rams, decides to retire.

"I believe my future as a head coach in the NFL will ultimately be with the St. Louis Rams," Martz said. "I am therefore announcing that I am not a candidate for any other head coaching positions in the NFL."
