McDowell County stars in native Jean Battlo's "McDowell County in West Virginia and American History," an attempt at pulling together a definitive history of the region. The 576-page book with more than 60 photos is perhaps one of the most thorough works over produced on an area that Battlo states was "only a whisper of history."

That whisper grew much louder when the Pocahontas coalfields began to be developed. The region's coal history is at the core of this study by Battlo. The history of King Coal between 1895 and 1929, the years of its greatest impact on McDowell County, composes nearly a third of the book.
