Q. What can you tell me about echinacea, the herb for the immune
system? I am taking the liquid kind morning and night for a cold.
A. Many people take echinacea to prevent the common cold, but a
recent study published in the Archives of Family Medicine suggests
that the herb may be better at treating colds than preventing them.
Echinacea's common name is purple coneflower. It's a wildflower
native to this continent. American Indians used it for a variety of
conditions, including treatment of venomous bites and other external
wounds.
