A FIRE service in the North-East is leading the way in reducing
the number of fire and hoax calls.
Cleveland Fire Brigade is second in a national league table for
success in reducing fires.
Figures from the National Audit Office and Home Office show a 14
per cent drop in fires throughout the UK in 1998, mainly due to wet
summers in the 1990s.
The Cleveland area is less affected by weather because it is
mainly urban. Figures for 1998 show there were 5,870 fires in
Cleveland, a 21 per cent fall from 1997, and a 36 per cent reduction
from five years ago.
