PROOF that life once existed on Mars could have been staring researchers in the face for 25 years, waiting for science to catch up and recognise it.

Space scientists studying the planet's surface a quarter of a decade ago failed to realise the significance of vital evidence they had gathered, according to the academic who says their data was "90% certain" to indicate the presence of life.

Professor Joseph Miller, of the University of Southern California's cell and neurobiology department, recently reviewed information transmitted back to earth from the two Viking landers which visited the red planet in 1976.
