Article: Students: we're all too scared to take a gap year and too skint

TAKING a year out from studies can help young people find work, discover hidden resources and widen their outlook, according to a new report. Yet only one in five who plan a "gap year" will go through with their plans.

The study blames bad career advice, faulty preconceptions and fears over cost for the fact that as many as 800,000 per year abandon their plans.

With exam results due in a little over a week, thousands of young Scots will be among those considering taking a year out.

The number choosing to do so grows every year. Up to 200,000 18 to 25-year-olds will postpone studies or work and set off to explore the globe.
