Basically resembling a pear-shaped melon, the papaya, with it's
delicately scented, creamy orange coloured flesh and sweet flavour,
is one of the best of all tropical fruits. Originally native to
lowland central America, it now thrives in a thousand different
outposts, thanks largely to the meddling of everyone's favourite
pioneers, the conquistadors. Now, mostly grown commercially in
Hawaii and South Africa, it flourishes quickly from seed and will
bear fruit in its first year. The fruits themselves, depending on
variety and age of tree, range in size from a cute smaller-than-an-
