A VILLAGE football club is pleading with councillors to secure
its future by backing plans for a new pitch.
Bowes Football Club is waiting for the outcome of next week's
meeting of Teesdale District Council's development control
committee, which will decide whether the club can build a pitch on
the remains of a Roman settlement.
The club faces an uncertain future as it searches for a site for
a pitch at the centre of the village, near Barnard Castle.
During the Roman occupation, the village was the site of a fort
with the unfortunate sounding name of Lavatrae.
It was an important stronghold, and was built in about 80AD to
