THE DEATH of a student who collapsed after eating an Indian meal
was caused by a rare food allergy, tests have confirmed.
Nicola Jane Ratcliffe, 18, suffered a severe reaction caused by a
nut allergy after leaving a tandoori restaurant in Durham.
Despite treatment by paramedics she was confirmed dead on arrival
at Dryburn Hospital, Durham.
Nicola, a first-year arts student at Durham University, was known
to suffer from an allergy to nuts.
It is believed she suffered an anaphylactic shock, a severe
reaction which can affect sufferers who ingest only tiny traces of
nut oil.
