THE past two columns have dwelt awhile in Witton Park, it's why Phil Atkinson rings from British Columbia. Phil's the organiser of The Gathering - the title pinched from a Kathryn Tickell LP, it transpires - the worldwide reunion of Witton Park exiles on July 22. Funny thing is, he won't be there himself.

He'd left when he was nine in 1962, the house compulsorily purchased for 45, the family decanted to Newton Aycliffe.

"We knew Witton Park was a rough place, but the way officialdom treated that community was callous in the extreme."

Having turned down a reporter's job he now writes speeches for the Canadian government and has launched the Witton Park website.
