Article: Leopard skin find sparks manhunt

AN international investigation was launched to track down poachers in the Serengeti after the discovery of a leopard skin in the North-East, it was revealed yesterday.

The skin of the protected animal was discovered during a search of a house in Durham by detectives investigating other incidents.

Investigations, still going on today, traced the animal to Kenya, revealing it was one of 100,000 leopards a year poached in East African countries in an underworld business worth 20m.

The skin bore the mark of the spear which had ended the creature's life for a payment of just 35p to the hunter.

Badly cured, the skin had begun to decompose and had to be destroyed by Durham Police.
