Beethoven: Waldstein Sonata etc. Smith. APR 5566 RONALD Smith is
one of Britain's most distinguished pianists: one who is a great
champion of the music of Alkan, Beethoven, Liszt among others. His
last recital in Darlington is still remembered. With this recording
of Beethoven Sonatas he is very much on home ground. The Waldstein
op 53, crisp, clearly articulate and marvellously effective pedal
effects in the final rondo. The Apassionata op 57 explores the
drama, passions and, in the central andante con moto, the quiet set
of variations. The remaining sonata, the C minor op 111, is like a
