The search is on to fill one of the most prestigious - and most
challenging - jobs in British retailing.
Last week, Sir Richard Greenbury quit as non-executive chairman
of
Marks & Spencer, leaving a larger-than-life gap at the ailing stores
group. Greenbury, who earned himself a reputation as an overbearing
leader, left the company a year ahead of schedule and a month before
its annual meeting.
But with his seat at M&S's Baker Street headquarters still warm,
the board moved swiftly to find a replacement. They appointed
Whitehead Mann, a firm of City headhunters, which was ordered to
cast
its net far and wide to reel in potential candidates for the
chairman's role.
