STANLEY Spencer's stormy marriage to Hilda Carline, the artist's
abandonment of his wife and young family to pursue his obsession
with
his neighbour Patricia Preece, his desire for a menage a trois after
divorcing Hilda, his rejection by his second wife who may have been
a
lesbian - this is the public perception of Spencer's destructive
private life.
Hilda's sister-in-law is the artist Nancy Carline. Now 89, Nancy
is the last of her generation of the Carline family to have
witnessed
the reality of Hilda and Stanley's troubled union. Her husband,
Richard, was Hilda's younger brother, an accomplished artist himself
who became a leading figure in art education.
