Christie's South Kensington last month secured pounds 34,500 for
"Teddy Edward", the bear featured on BBC TV's Watch With Mother
programmes.
But now, the auctioneer says, prices for old teddies have
overheated. Better to seek out other stuffed animals, such as cows
and rabbits by Steiff and other leading makers, it says.
Early wooden dolls have slumped in price since the 1980s: down
from pounds 50,000 to pounds 60,000 to between pounds 10,000 and
pounds 30,000 - and then only if in their original clothes and from
a noted source. Early English wax dolls with their original clothes
are now worth just pounds 600 to pounds 800.
But early 19th century games and puzzles are "very undervalued", ...
