3001: The Final Odyssey
by Arthur C. Clarke
HarperCollins,
pounds 16.99, 272 pp
THE WRITER Brian Aldiss was quite correct when he observed that
science fiction is no more written for scientists than ghost
stories are written for ghosts. Although some scientists are quite
happy for novelists to play fast and loose with hard-won scientific
results, for others it seems absurd to decouple the rational and
the imaginative elements of science. It's rather like watching
tennis being played without a court.
