AT BREAKFAST, my host, Henkie, offered me biltong in a choice of
two Tupperware containers. "They're both kudu, but we smoked this
one." He dived in with a massive paw and took a sample. I followed
suit, and my mouth filled with the rich taste of dried Boer
survival snack. But I wasn't about to starve. The table groaned
with home-baked scones and fine-grained German bread.
Henkie's wife took her seat by my side, buttoned to the neck in a
black silk blouse. Plate full, I picked up my knife and fork. With
an agonised glance, Henkie clutched at his wife's hand and recited
