SURPRISING as it seems, The Songmakers' Almanac has already
existed for 20 years. Its founder and guiding spirit, the pianist
Graham Johnson, has been indefatigable in providing "thematic" song
recitals of high quality, exceptional interest and lightly worn
scholarship, ranging from a biography of Alma Mahler, which caused
Schoenberg's daughter to storm out of an Edinburgh Festival concert
because Tom Lehrer's witty song about Alma was included, to surveys
of the various settings of Goethe or Walter Scott.
