JUST down the road from the Channel Tunnel terminal at Calais
and a world away from the sun-kissed land of Nicole and Papa, the
other ancient, peasant France continues to eke out a living.
Occasionally, however, it still has the capacity to shock. That
was the case last week as details emerged of an incest scandal on a
neglected corner of waste ground half a mile from a drink warehouse
crowded with British day-trippers stocking up for Christmas.
Unlike the Belgian paedophile murders, this was not a matter of
state - a grand criminal conspiracy capable of calling the very
institutions of government into question.
Rather, in the dismissive words of a local Calais official, it
was a "banal" ...
