McEWAN'S have announced they are watering down their lager - to
save themselves tax - and cutting the price of a pint.
The alcohol content will be reduced from 4.1 percent to just 3.6
percent.
Brewery bosses say it will make McEwan's lager Scotland's best-
value pint.
But anti-alcohol groups claim the cheaper beer would simply
encourage beer lovers to drink more pints.
Cath Cakebread, national training manager of the Scottish Council
for Alcohol, said cutting costs generally led to more consumption.
Mrs Cakebread said: "We commend any move to reduce the alcohol
content in lagers.
"However, we would express reservations about the price cuts in
alcohol, because surveys have shown this ...
