Steve Jervis arrived on Grand Bahama from Birmingham three years
ago with his wife, Tracey, three children and three suitcases. He
was looking to invest the proceeds of a business sale and fell in
love with the desert island.
"Two hundred years ago I would have been a cowboy exploring the
Colorado wilderness in the United States," he says. Instead he is
one of the pioneers developing the former British colony. As Florida
bursts at the seams with migrant sunseekers, and the allure of
Barbados slips a little with the loss of its Concorde flight, the
cheaper Grand Bahama is proving a magnet for investors in search of
