MACEDONIA APPEARED to be sliding closer to full-scale civil war yesterday with escalating battles between government forces and Albanian rebels severely reducing hopes of a peace deal being signed tomorrow.

Ilinka Mitreva, Macedonia's Foreign Minister, called on the international community to take more robust action against the guerrillas from the self-styled National Liberation Army whose attacks on the army have spread across the whole of the northern half of the country. The authorities declared yesterday a day of national mourning after eight soldiers were killed in a mine blast outside Skopje on Friday.
