RUPERT Murdoch's News International is drawing up plans to launch
a 24-hour free London newspaper in a move that would trigger all-
out war with Lord Rothermere's Associated Newspapers, publisher of
Metro.
News International, which publishes the Times and the Sun, has
started talks with Railtrack to take over exclusive rights to
distribute the new paper at main stations. The contract is currently
held by Metro. It expires at the end of March and News International
is said to have offered pounds 4m a year for it, more than three
times the sum paid by Associated.
