Article: World's largest train set expected to fetch pounds 100,000

THE WORLD'S largest and most expensive toy train is to be sold after spending all of its 95 years with the same family.

The spectacular 1906 Marklin train set, with a locomotive that puffs real steam as it chugs round 220ft of track, is expected to attract bids of up to pounds 100,000 at Christie's in South Kensington on December 17.

The buyer will need plenty of space to display his trophy. The train is 12ft long, and a small child can actually perch on the elaborately detailed 15in-high Mignon locomotive, which pulls a six- wheel tender, carriage, 1st class dining car with verandah, and smoking car with luggage compartment.
