AT 6.27 last Monday evening, in the cavernous Skyscape cinema
alongside the Millennium Dome, the air of apprehension gripping the
audience was turning slowly to agitation. Sitting side-by-side were
the men and women who answer the Dome's ticket phone lines, the
staff in black and yellow jackets who greet the public, the
accountants and cleaners, the computer technicians, the dancers and
the acrobats.
Almost 1,500 people had been summoned to the hastily arranged
meeting to hear their new chief executive, the French former Disney
executive who was being hailed by that morning's headlines as
Monsieur Fixit, the Saviour of the Dome.
