PRESSURE is growing on the US government to freeze some or all of its $120 million ( pounds 77 million) annual contribution to the International Red Cross in protest at the organisation's refusal to admit Israel as a member.

The move, which would throw the Geneva-based humanitarian body into disarray, reflects impatience within Congress at the 50-year exclusion of the Magen David Adom (MDA) - the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross - from the international relief organisation.
