THE French and German governments have resolved to reverse the euro's relentless slide by launching the EU on a fresh course of political integration during a summit near Paris this week.

After a catastrophic month for the fledgling currency, struggling to maintain an exchange value of 90 US cents, senior political figures on both sides of the Rhine have decided that the only way to boost confidence in the future of the euro is through a show of political ambition.
