ABOUT 20 YEARS ago, The New Statesman ran a competition in which
contestants were invited to propose titles for a "shortest book".
One of the winners - alongside Italian War Heroes and The Wit and
Wisdom of Prince Philip - was My Struggle by Martin Amis.
Martin Amis at the time had published two or three amusing novels
and won the odd literary prize but he had by no means secured the
top spot that is his today. Even so, he was clearly on the way. As
well as writing novels, he was prominent as an editor and book
reviewer and was generally visible on the literary scene.
