Shortly after 9 am on Thursday, Sir Richard Branson, looking
tanned and relaxed, flew into Gatwick's South terminal to be met by
reporters eager for his verdict on the news that he was poised to
fulfil his dream of running the National Lottery.
Unknown to him, at the North terminal, Louise White, the equally
tanned but downhearted director of public affairs for arch rivals
Camelot, was preparing to board her flight to Marseilles and return
to an interrupted family holiday.
The past 24 hours had seen a reversal in their fortunes. Sir
Richard spent a frustrating Wednesday trapped on his Caribbean
island of Necker by a hurricane, as even the Mirror newspaper, which
