SOLDIERS are routinely using mobile phones to communicate during
training exercises because the Army's combat radio system is so
unreliable.
Concern that the military is becoming reliant on civilian mobile
phones raises fears that security could be compromised if sensitive
conversations are monitored.
An estimated 5,000 mobile phones are in service with the Army.
Brigades are able to order phones from private companies including
Vodafone, paying for them out of their own budgets. As a result,
there is no central monitoring of the official use of mobile phones
by Army commanders or the Ministry of Defence.
