BRITAIN'S leading oil companies and haulage firms have paid their
petrol tanker drivers a "thank you" bonus of pounds 500 each for
driving through the blockades of farmers and hauliers in the height
of last month's fuel crisis.
Shell, BP and transport groups such as P&O and Exel agreed to pay
their drivers the money within hours of the fuel blockade ending two
weeks ago. The payments followed consultation with the Transport &
General Workers Union, which represents many of the drivers.
At least 1,000 drivers have already been promised the bonus,
which the companies say is intended to reward them for getting the
oil out of terminals and refineries under difficult conditions.
