DES MOINES (AP) - A judge declared invalid an executive order
made by Gov. Tom Vilsack last year that prohibited the state from
employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender
identity.
Glenn E. Pille, Polk County District Court judge, wrote that
Vilsack's order stretched the protected categories beyond what is
described in state law. Pille issued his decision Thursday.
"The governor exceeded his authority ... by purporting to modify
the protected classes," he wrote. The order was "a violation of the
separation of powers provisions in the Constitution of Iowa."
Twenty-three Republican lawmakers and a former chief of the Iowa
